Al Phillips has been a UA Local 170 member for 35 years and has served in Local 170 roles for more than 28 years.
Since 2018, he has led the Local as Business Manager / Financial Secretary.
A Message from Al
I've led Local 170 through good times and some very difficult ones. We've faced the threat of trusteeship, financial hardship that required tough decisions, and constant pressure from CLR and employers looking to chip away at our collective agreement.
I haven't taken those decisions lightly. I know they affect your livelihood, your family, and the future of our union. Through it all, I've made the hard calls and stood my ground when our members' interests were on the line.
That experience matters. I know what this job demands, and I'm ready to keep doing the work to protect our members and move Local 170 forward.

Al advocated and lobbied the provincial government tirelessly
and achieved a $241m investment in trades training. This investment will benefit future UA Local 170 apprentices and tradespeople across B.C.
UAPICBC EXPANSION
KELOWNA
Al supported the expansion of a brand new United Association Piping Industry College campus in Kelowna, where young tradespeople have been learning the UA piping trades. Growing our training and our union into different parts of B.C. is crucial to our ongoing success.
